What is Ringworm?

Ringworm is not a worm but it is a misnomer, is a fungus that causes the infection. It is also known as dermatophytosis, dermatophyte infection, or tinea.  The lesion formed by this infection resembles a worm in the shape of a ring hence it is called ringworm. Both humans and animals are prone to this infection. In the initial stage, there is the formation of red patches on affected areas of the skin and later may spread to other parts of the body. This can affect the scalp, feet, nails, groin, beard, or other areas. But when it happens in between your toes then it is referred to as athlete’s foot. If it spreads to the groin region then it is known as jock itch.

What are the causes of Ringworm?

Ringworm is caused by a type of fungus that eats keratin so it is called dermatophytes. They attack the body parts which have enough keratin to attract them like skin, scalp, hair, and nails. These microscopic spores can survive on the surface of the skin for months.

Different types of fungi cause ringworm and it depends upon the parts where it affects the body:

  1. Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis): It often starts as an isolated scaling in the scalp that develops into itchy, scaly bald patches. Children are more prone to it.
  2. Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis): There is an appearance of patches on the skin with the characteristic round ring shape.
  3. Jock itch (tinea cruris) refers to ringworm infection of the skin that happens around the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. This is mostly happening in men and adolescent boys.
  4. Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis): This type of infection happens in the foot and it is often seen in those who go barefoot in public places where the infection can spread, such as locker rooms, showers, and swimming pools.

It can happen in the following ways:

  • From another person: It mainly spread through skin-to-skin contact.
  • From your pets: Rubbing or grooming Sparky, wash your hands and it is very common in cows.
  • By touching objects: By touching the affected objects like surfaces, clothes, towels, and in combs and brushes can cause ringworm.
