The eyes are the windows to the soul and one of the main sites of pitta dosha called alocha. Excess of computer work, other stressful work can affect the vision. Diminished vision, dryness, strain, blood shot may appear. The therapy advised inn such case is netra vasti.
The process of keeping Medicated ghee or oil in the eyes for a certain period of time is called Netra Vasti (Akshi tarpanam). It is the best purification & rejuvenation treatment of eye. This procedure is useful in healthy as well as diseased people. Netra Tarpana cools, lubricates, and rejuvenates the eyes improves the inner vision by clearing out the subtle channels associated with inner and outer perception. It helps to bring back brightness and clarity to the eyes as impurities are expelled out. It is also used to help early formation of cataract, helps with sleep, Glaucoma, Chronic Conjunctivitis, and promotes relaxation.
The patient is made to lie. A gentle massage is done on forehead and face too. A tank of flour paste is made around both the eyes. Medicated ghee and oil is poured in those tanks. The patient is asked to blink. The eyes comfortably swim in the ghee for about 20 minutes .This procedure is done for atleast 7 days. Best time to do this procedure is after sunset.

Netra Tarpana acts as both preventive and curative therapy for maintaining normal healthy condition of eyes. It gives strength to the ocular muscles, nerves, nourishes the eyes, open the obstructed channels of the eyes, and increases the blood circulation. It lubricates the eyes. These properties of akshi tarpana strengthens eye sight, and helpful in other eye diseases. He prescribed medicines has the quality of transpassing into minute channels of the body, hence when applied in the eyes, it enters deeper layers of Dathus and cleans every minute part. The lipophilic action of Gritha facilitates the transportation of the drug to the target organ and finally reaches the cell because the cell membrane also contains lipids. This facilitates the action of drug by two ways, first by allowing more absorption of the drug, by the corneal surface, and secondly by exerting direct pressure up on the cornea.
