What is a bilva?

The bael tree is a very old tree. In Indian texts it is called the divine tree. The old yellow-leaved fruit, which is in this tree, turns green again after one year. If you keep its leaves broken, they remain intact for 6 months. The shade of this tree cools and makes it healthy. The vine tree is intermediate, and consists of thorns. The bark of its stem is soft, light brown to yellow. The new branches are green, and zigzagged. Its leaf is green, and the front part of the leaves is spiked and fragrant.

Its flowers are green and white in color. Its fruits are circular, elliptical, brown or yellow in color. Fruit peels are hard and smooth. Its seeds are small, white and smooth in a group of 10-15. The vine tree has flowers and fruits from February to July.

Arjuna, Terminalia ArjunaUp to 80ft tall Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) trees covered with tender green leaves and standing in rows on liver banks and at the edges of rivulets in dry hilly regions appear as if worriors like Arjuna with innumerable weapons are ready for battle to destroy enemies in the guise of diseases. This tree is found in forests, it flowers in summer and bears fruits in winter.


The trunk of this tree is massive with diameter of 10-20ft. The bark is white on the outside, smooth, and up to one third inch thick,it is blood red inside. The leaves are 3-6 inch long and 1-2 inch wide on small branches adjacent at places.


Arjunarishta is an Ayurvedic liquid medicine, popularly used as herbal heart tonic. Arjunarishta contains 6 – 12 % of self generated alcohol in it. This self generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble active herbal components to the body.



Mix the powder of its root in sesame oil and use this to gargle. It cures mouth disorders.


Put 2-3 drops of its juice in ears. It cures ear pain.


Grind its bark and then mix it with honey and apply this on the face.


Take powder of Arjuna bark and give the juice of leaves of Adusa prepared using bhawanayen method. Mix 1-2 gm. honey, sugar candy and cow’s ghee in it and give this to the patient. It cures cough of tuberculosis where the cough of tuberculosis where the cough includes blood also.


  1. When the normal rate of heartbeat increases from 60-100, take one glass juice of tomato and add 1 teaspoonful of powder of Arjuna bark in it. Give this to the patient regularly. It normalizes the heart beat.
  2. Grind thick bark of Arjuna. Mix 1 teaspoonful of this powder in 1 cup of milk after removing the cream. Give this to the patient every morning and evening. It is beneficial in curing all types of heart disorders. It strengthens the heart and eradicates weakness.


  1. In case of heart weakness and in swelling of heart, cook 4-8 gm powder of its bark with jiggery and milk. Strain the milk and give this to the patient. It prevents water of blood lymph from getting into the blood vessels and thus prevents swelling which in turn cures the fatigueness and weakness of heart.
  2. In case of heart diseases, impact of cloth sieved powder of its bark is much more effective than an injection. Keep its powder on the tongue and suck it. It gives immediate relief. Its effect is similar to that of sorbitrate tablet. In case of fast heartbeat and high pulse rate, keep its powder on the tongue of the patient. It immediately provides strength to the pules. The effect of this medicine is permanent and does not cause any negative effect.


It happens due to controlling urine pressure and can be cured by giving 20ml decoction of its bark, every morning and evening to the patient.


Boil 1 teaspoonful powder of Arjuna bark in 1 cup milk till milk is reduced to half. Add a little amount of sugar candy in it and give this to the patient, thrice a day.


Soak its 2 gm bark in water over night. Next day morning crush it or boil it to prepare the decoction. Give this decoction to the patient. It is beneficial in curing bleeding disorders.


Give 30ml decoction of its root in fever.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) – Health Benefits, Uses & Side Effects

All over India, especially in dry lands and Himalayan region, natural and cultivated plants of winter cherry are found even at heights of 5,500 ft. Compared to the natural plants, cultivated plants are medicinally superior. But for oil extraction, it is better to use natural forest plant.


It is beneficial in curing cough and acidity. It increases physical strength, is purgative and improves vitality. It is beneficial for the digestive function and in curing weakness.


  1. Multinodular Tuberculosis:- Take fresh new leaves of winter cherry with equal quantities of jiggery and prepare cherry shaped tablets. Give one tablet to patient in the morning with stale water.
  2. Angina:- In case of pain in the heart due to acidity, give 1gm winter cherry powder with water. It bring relief.
  3. Tuberculosis:- Give 1gm winter cherry powder with 10gm decoction of its own. It is beneficial in curing tuberculosis.
  4. Cough:- Take 5gm root of winter cherry and grind it solid. Mix 5gm sugar candy in it and then boil true in 200ml water till water is reduced to 1/6 of the of quantity. Give this to the patient in little portions repeatedly.
  5. Conceiving:- Take 10gm winter cherry powder, 1/2 litre water and 150 ml milk. Cook them all together at low heat till only milk is left behind. Add 4gm sugar candy and 4gm ghee to it. Three days after the completion of menstrual cycle, give this mixture to the woman for three days. The woman definitely conceives with this treatment.
  6. Abortion:- In case the foetus aborts naturally, give 5gm each of fresh juice of winter cherry and white kateri root from first to fifth month of pregnancy.
  7. Helminths:- Take equal quantities of winter cherry powder and guduchi powder. Mix them with 4-8gm honey and give to the patient regularly.
  8. Improving eyesight:- Take 1gm winter cherry powder, 1gm amla powder and ½ gm liquorice root powder. Mix them all and give tea spoon with water, every morning and evening. It helps in improving eyesight.
  9. Arthritis:- Take winter cherry whole plant, grind it and strain it. Give 20-25 gm of this to the patient. It cures arthritis pain. Also, take 20gm fresh leaves and boil in 150gm ml water till water is reduced to half. Strain the solution and give to the patient.
  10. Lumbago:- Give 2-4 gm powder with ghee or sugar. It cures lumbago and lack of sleep.
  11. Joints pain:- Mix 2gm winter cherry powder with 2gm ghee and 1/2gm sugar. Give this to the patient every morning and evening.
  12. Weakness, fatigue:- Treatment with winter cherry for a year makes the body healthy and disease free. Take 5gm each of winter cherry powder, sesame oil and ghee and 1gm honey. Mix them all and in winter season give this to the patient.
  13. Blood disorders:- Take equal quantities of chopchini and winter cherry powder and mix them. Take 2gm of this mixture with honey every morning and evening.
  14. Fever:- Take 4gm powder of winter cherry, 2gm powder of guduchi salt. Mix and take daily in the evening with warm water.
  15. All kinds of disorders:- Take mixture of 150 gm guduchi salt with 4gm ashwagandha powder. Give this mixture with honey. It helps cure all types of disorders.

Isabgol (Psyllium husk) – Health Benefits, Uses & Side Effects

The main place of its origin is Iran from where it is imported in India. But now it is also cultivated in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. Seed and seed powder of plantago ovate species, described here, are used for medicinal purposes. It has two more species- Plantago Lanceolata, Plantago Major.


The plant is 3-6 ft tall, seasonal, bushy, and without stem. The leaves have three veins, are undivided, and 7-8 inch long. The stem of the flowers is like ears of wheat on which tiny flowers grow containing boat- shaped seeds. The seeds have husk on them, which forms a slippery, tasteless and odourless slime when it come in contact with water.


The seeds have large amounts of mucilages and albumin. The husk mainly contains mucilage and cellulose.


It is lubricating and mildly intoxicating. It cures diarrhea and dysentery. The husk creates tenderness and gives physical strength. It is extremely nutritive, sweet, and cool. It is smooth, oily, astringent, and vata enhancing.


Chronic rhinitis:-

  1. In case of pitta nature, swallow its mucilaginous pulp.
  2. In case of cough and chronic rhinitis, give decoction of Isabgol.


Grind it with Eucalyptus leaves and apply this paste on ear lobes. It cures headache.

Ear pain:-

Take its 15 gm mucilage and mix 15 gm onion juice in it. Warm the solution and put a few drops in the ears. It cures the ear pain.

Mouth problems:-

Gargle with its mucilaginous pulp.


Soak it in vinegar and keep it under the teeth. It cures toothache.

Asthma, breathlessness, bronchitis:-

Give 4-7 gm seeds with warm water every morning. It is beneficial in asthma, breathlessness and bronchitis.

Stomach problem:-

  1. In case of severe diarrhea with bleeding and bleeding diathesis, give isabgol powder with 2 teaspoonful curd, 2-3 times a day.
  2. In children, it helps cure old diarrhea.
  3. Soak its seeds in water till it forms the mucilage. Give this to the patient with sugar added in it. It cures amoebic dysentery, severe diarrhea due to indigestion.


  1. Give 1-2 teaspoonful Isabgol powder at night with warm milk. It cures constipation.
  2. Take equal quantities of Isabgol powder and triphala powder. Give 4-6 gm of this mixture with warm water at night before going to bed. Next day morning, the motions happen easily. For swelling stomach and pitta disorders this is an extremely effective treatment.

Bleeding piles:-

Give its squash to the patient. It stops bleeding from boils.


Mix the squash of China rose with its mucilage and give this to the patient.

Amoebic dysentery:-

Take 150 gm Isabgol powder and mix 50 gm each of aniseed and sugar. Give 3-7 teaspoonful of this mixture 3-6 times a day.

Urinary disorders:-

In case where quantity of urine released is almost nil or when there is burning sensation while releasing the urine, soak 5 teaspoonful powder in 2 glass of water and after some time add sugar as per taste and give this to the patient. It cures the burning sensation and pain in the urinary area.


Tie poultice of Isabgol on the joints. It gives relief from pain.


It may lead to weakness of nerves and muscles. It is anti- appetizer.

Ashoka Herb (Saracaka Indica) : Medicinal Properties, Usage & Health Benefits

Ashok tree (Saracaka Indica) are found all over India. These are grown in gardens for decoration. It is more common at heights of 3000 ft.

The evergreen ashok tree is 30-35 ft tall and with its numerous dense branches provides cool shade. When mature, it is brown in color and rough. The inside of its bark is reddish. Leaves are 10 inch long, round and pointed. They grow together in pairs of 6-7. New leaves are reddish in colour but turn dark green in colour on maturing. The edges of the leaves are wavy. Flowers grow in bunches. These are orange or reddish in colour when mature and very beautiful with a nice fragrance. The pod is 5-11 inch long, 2-3 inch wide and grows in summer season. Each pod has 5-11 seeds. When unripe it is dark purple in colour and when ripe, it turns into red colour. Seeds are 1-1.5 inch long, flat with thick outer covering. When the stem is pricked, liquid oozes out which turns red when exposed to air.


The bark has tannins, essential oil, haemotoxicilin- a Ketosterol, a glycoside, saponins, calcium and carbonic compounds one with calcium the other with iron. The ketosterol of the bark has properties as that of the estrogen hormone. This is why it is very effective on the reproductive system.


It is light, dry, bitter, pungent and cool. It promotes spleen growth, blood formation and is a pain reliever. It improves complexion, enhances bone healing, is very fragrant and cures tridosas. It is also beneficial as an anthelmintic, in curing rheumatoid arthritis, severe, pain, piles, and blood disorders. It cures uterus related disorders, all types of fever, acidity, indigestion and related disorders. It is used to cure bleeding disorders, renal stones and urinary disorders. The bark is analgesic and antipyretic. It helps cure digestive disorders, blood related disorders, weakness, fatigue, piles, swelling, pain etc. It also helps cure stomach disorders, excessive bleeding, bleeding from uterus etc.


Promotes intellect:-

Take equal quantities of ashok bark and brahmi powder. Give 2 tea spoon of this mixture every morning and evening with 2 cup of milk, regularly for a few months. It sharpens intellect.


Boil decoction of its bark till it thickens. Take it off fire and let it cool and then add equal amount of mustard oil in it. Apply this on acne, boils etc. Regular use shows positive results.

Bronchial asthma:-

Take the seeds powder not more than the size of a rice seed. Wrap this powder in betel leaf and give to the patient for 5-8 times. It gives relief in asthma.

Facial paste:-

Take juice of its bark and grind mustard seeds in it. Let the mixture dry in shade. When it is to be applied on face, grind mustard in its bark’s juice and apply. It helps improve the complexion.

Bleeding diarrhea: –

Grind 2-3 gm flowers in water and give to the patient. It controls blood loss in stool.

Bleeding piles: –

Give 30-40 ml decoction of its bark. It controls the blood from piles.


  1. Mix equal amount of bark powder and sugar candy. Take 2gm of this mixture with cow’s milk every morning and evening. It helps cure leucorrhoea.
  2. Give 30-40ml decoction of its bark with milk every morning and evening. It helps cure leucorrhoea and metrorrhagia.

Menstrual cycle:-

Take 60gm bark and boil with 4 times the amount of water till the water is reduced to one fourth. Add 60ml milk and boil the solution till the water is completely evaporated. Mix the solution and then give to the patient morning and evening.

Grapes (Angur) – Medicinal Usage & Health Benefits

Grapes vine is a popular fruit of a perennial creeper. It is one of the best fruits without any harmful effects. It can be used by anyone be it a patient, healthy person, children or adults. There are several varieties of grapes like, black grapes, small grapes, long grapes, violent grapes. Black grapes are dried and make munakka.

Ripe Fruit: – It is a purgative, cool, beneficial for eyes and nutritious. Its juice is sweet and good for voice. Its helps clean urine and stool. It helps cure thirst, fever, breathing problems and asthma.



Take equal quantities of grapes and Indian gooseberry, boil and crush them. Mix shunthi churna in it. Give a little amount with honey to the patient.

Take 20gm munakka 10ml each of sugar candy, pomegranate bark and khus- khus. Grind all solid and soak them in 400gm water overnight. Next morning strain the solution and divide into three parts. Give each part to the patient in a day.


Take 7- 9gm munakka. 7gm sugar candy and 7gm liquorice. Grind them all. Give inhalation of this powder to the patient. It cures headache due to pitta and any other disorder.


Take 7gm pieces of munakka, 2-3gm jamun leaves. Prepare the decoction and use it to gargle. It cures any aliment in the mouth.


Give inhalation of 2drops of grapes juice. It immediately controls bleeding from nose.


In case of foul smell from mouth due to cough or indigestion, give 4-8gm munakka end every day. It may not control foul smell due to worms in stomach.


Take 5gm each of munakka and roasted paddy and soak them in water for 1 hour. After one hour, crush them and strain the solution. Mix 3-3gm each of sugar, honey and ghee in the strained solution and give the patient to lick.


Prepare decoction of 7-9 munakka pieces and Haritaki. In c 30-50 gm of decoction, add 20-25 gm sugar and 1 teaspoon full honey. Give this to patient.


Take equal quantities of grapes, Indian gooseberry, dates, and black pepper. Grind them all give this paste to the patient.


Prepare paste of ghee, dates, sugar candy honey and long pepper and give to the patient. It helps cure voice hoarseness, cold and fever.


Take 5 pieces of munakka 20pieces of long pepper and 40gm sugar and 1gm catechu. Mix them all and give to the patient with honey, daily.


In case of pain in heart, take 2part munakka’s pulp, 1part honey 1\2 part cloves. Mix them all and give to the patient for a few days.


Take 5 -10 munakka pieces. Clean them and remove the seeds and boil them in 100gm milk. Give this boiled milk to the patient.

Take 15-20 munakka pieces, 4 pieces of big, 2gm each of aniseed, sanaya, pulp of amaltas and rose flowers. Prepare decoction of all these together and give the decoction to the patient in the morning with 5gm jam of rose petals.


Prepare decoction of grapes and Malabar nut. Give 30-50 mg of this decoction to the patient. It cures liver pain due to pitta kapha.


Take 7 gm munakka and 3gm of aniseed. Soak them 50ml of water. In the morning crush this mixture strain it and drink.


Take branch of black grape plant and burn it to ashes. Take 5gm of this ash and mix it in water, give this solution to the patient twice a day.


In spring, the branches of grape plant produce a liquid which is very beneficial in curing skin problems.


Give 5gm grape vinegar with 50ml milk, repeatedly.


Let the patient vomit and then give 5-10 gm kishmish cooked in 150ml milk.

It is a well known plant all over India. Specially grown in warm and humid region, especially in Bihar, Orissa, and Banaras. Betel of Banaras is considered to be best quality.

The climbing vine of betel is very soft and pretty. The leaves are heart shape with veins, its thick and with 1 inch long stem. It has pleasant odour and taste is slightly warm and fragrant.

The leaf contains proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and tannin. Its rich in iron, iodine, vitamin A, B, and C. It has volatile oil containing phenol and tarpine.

Harmful Effects of Betel Leaves

It is strong, war, and excites pitta, hence is not advised in excessive bleeding disorders, traumatic injury to thorax. Excess intake of betel reduces appetite and weakens liver slowly so it should be taken in appropriate amount. It contain hapixine and betel nut contain arkidine both are poisonous elements hence it should be taken in less amount. Excess of catechu can damage lungs and excess lime cane can damage the teeth.
