Chronic Gastritis – Causes, Symptoms, Ayurvedic treatment, Herbal Remedies, Diet & Lifestyle


Chronic Gastritis is defined as the inflammation of the lining of the stomach. The stomach lining contains certain glands that produce acid. This acid performs the function of breaking down the food and enzyme pepsin breaks down the protein. Bacteria, alcohol or caffeine intake leads to the inflammation of the stomach’s lining.

Patient suffering from this condition experience early satiety and dull persistent stomach pain. In few cases, ulcers may also be seen. Chronic gastritis could be painful or painless.


Chronic gastritis is caused due to following reasons:

  • Intake of alcohol for a long period of time
  • Use of certain medicines for a long period of time such as steroids and aspirin
  • Certain bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori causes gastritis
  • In diseases such as kidney failure
  • Due to viral infections, that further weakens the immune system
  • Stress
  • Due to bile reflux
  • Due to any major surgery, severe burns or any surgery
  • Due to vitamin B12 deficiency


  • Pain in upper abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Hiccups
  • Black and tarry stools
  • Indigestion


According to ayurveda, chronic gastritis is compared with Urdhavaga Amlapitta. Urdhavaga Amlapitta is caused mainly due to aggravation of the pitta dosha. The pitta dosha is aggravated due to improper dietary habits or due to excessive consumption of alcohol, tobacco or caffeine. It also gets aggravated due to the intake of excessive hot and spicy food. The vitiated pitta dosha causes improper digestion of the food and hence in the production of the ama or toxins in the body. This ama or toxins when accumulates inside the body, it increases the level of acid production, which leads to the formation of the condition chronic gastritis of Urdhavaga Amlapitta.

Ayurvedic formulations useful in this condition are:

  • Kamdudha Rasa
  • Chandrakala Rasa
  • Sootshekhar Rasa
  • Amlapitta Mishran
  • Aamalaki Churna
  • Avipattikar Churna


  • Avoid eating fried foods such as fries or other vegetables fried in oil
  • Avoid having excess citrus juices
  • Avoid intake of tea and coffee
  • Include low fat dairy products in your diet
  • Take in fruits and vegetables in your diet. Fruits rich in vitamin C such as amla are found to be useful in gastritis.
  • Avoid spicy, sour and chilly food
  • Restrict the use of garlic, ginger, coriander and cumin seeds
  • Restrict the intake of salt in your diet as it irritates the stomach lining
  • Avoid papad, chutney and pickles
  • Khichadi is the best diet in gastritis
  • Include milk in your diet
  • Avoid the intake of tobacco, alcohol and smoking
  • Include ghee in your diet
  • Eat smaller and more frequent meals
  • Drink atleast 7-8 glasses of water every day to get rid of excess wastes.
  • Avoid stressful physical activity. Do light excercises like walking, jogging.
  • Avoid meat and meat products.


  • Take about 120 grams of ginger root before meals. This helps in eliminating bacteria and reduces gastritis.
  • Mix asafetida and cumin in some tamarind water. Take this two times a day for relieving gastritis.
  • Have coconut water in your diet. Coconut water contains a lot of minerals and compounds that help in digestion of the food and provide relief from gastritis.
  • Chew a handful of fennel seeds twice a day as it promotes the secretion of the bile, which helps in the digestion of the fats. Hence relieves the gastritis.
  • Add some liquorice root to a cup of hot water. Strain it after cooling. Drink this thrice a day to treat gastritis.
  • People with gastritis should take two bowls of rice daily for treating gastritis as rice gruel helps in forming the gastric juice.
  • Extract the juice from one raw potato. Drink this thrice a day thirty minutes before the meals.
  • Extract the juice of marigold. Take this extract 2-3 times a day.
  • Mix 200 ml spinach juice in about 100 ml of carrot juice. Drink this juice two times a day.
  • Lemon juice with a pinch of salt in it is highly beneficial for relieving gastritis.
