In Ayurveda, Conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary tract are known as “Mutravahasrota Roga” and affecting the bladder and urethra are known as “Mutraghata”.

Burning Urination

Burning sensation is a most common symptom of a urinary tract infection.
According to ayurveda, Burning urination is an indicator of vitiated pitta dosha.

Nephritis

Nephritis is defined as Inflammation of the kidneys.
In Ayurveda nephritis is known as Vrikka sotha.

Haematuria

Generally Haematuria is defined as the presence of blood cells in the urine.
According to Ayurveda, it is a form of adhoga raktapitta.
It can be caused by strenuous exercise, infection, stones in the genito-urinary tract, polycystic kidney disease

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

UTIs are more common in women than men because the length of their urethra is shorter than men’s.
An e.coli bacterium is the most common cause of UTIs.

Kidney stones

Renal stones are generally formed by excess calcium, phosphates or oxalates around the kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra. When stones come down the urinary tract it can be excruciatingly painful.

Proteinuria

The presence of an abnormal amount of protein in the urine is known as proteinuria.

The presence of protein in urine is not a problem by itself but it suggests the kidneys are not working properly. It may need detailed analysis of kidney function.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is generally caused by bacterial infection.
Inflammation of the prostate gland results in urinary frequency and urgency, burning and painful urination, and pain in the lower genital areas.

According to the Acharya charaka mutraghata has 13 kinds-

Mutrakshaya (Anuria)
Mutrashukra (Semen in urine)
Usnavata (Cystitis, gonorrhea)
Mutragranthi (Malignant neoplasm /tumor of the bladder)
Vatakundalika (spasmodic stricture of the bladder)
Vatastheela (Enlargement of prostate)
Mutrajathara (Distended bladder with urine and gas)
Vidavighata (Retrovesical fistula)
Mutrasanga (Stricture of urethra)
Vastikundalam (Atonic condition of the bladder)
Mutrasada (Crystalluria; scanty urination)
Vatavasti (retention of urine/ Obstruction of the bladder outlet)
Mutratita (Decrease in force of urinary stream; incontinence of urine)

  • Snehapana-

    Causes of abdominal pain
