How to treat Diarrhea through Ayurveda?

Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose and watery stools with or without abdominal pressure and cramps. It is commonly referred to as gas or flatulence. It is one of the most common illnesses in all age groups as the main cause of lost days of work or school.

People of all age groups can suffer from the condition, and the average adult has one episode of acute diarrhea per year. The main cause of severe illness is the loss of fluids and electrolytes. The fluid passes out of the body before it is absorbed by the intestines. When it is unable to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss due to which diarrhea is impaired, this results in dehydration.

Diarrhea is generally divided into two types:

  1. Acute
  2. Chronic

Acute diarrhea is a condition that lasts from a few days up to a week.

Chronic diarrhea can be defined in several ways, but it usually lasts for more than three weeks.

There’s another type which is known as traveler’sdiarrhea. It happens when there is diarrhea after being exposed to bacteria or parasites while on vacation in a developing nation.

What is the Ayurvedic view of Diarrhea?

In Ayurveda, diarrhea is referred to as “Atisara”. As per the doshas, Atisara has been classified into 6 types– vataj, pittaj, kaphaj, sannipatik, bhayaj, and shokaj types.

Vatajatisara is mainly caused by Vatadosha and is marked by painful loose stools with gases and sounds. In Pittajatisara there is a vitiation of pitta dosha and passing of stools with a burning sensation and offensive odor. Stool in kaphajatisara is sticky, oily, and whitish with a foul odor. Sannipatikatisara is caused due to the vitiation of three doshas and have mixed characteristics. Bhayaj and Shokajatisara is caused due to fear as well as grief.

What are the causes of diarrhea?

The main causes of diarrhea include viral and bacterial infections, intestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome [IBS]), reactions to medications, and food intolerance.

Other causes include:

The passage of red-coloredstool suggests intestinal bleeding and could be a sign of a more severe infection. The passage of thick and tarry black stools suggests significant intestinal bleeding. How to Reduce Uric Acid Naturally?

uric acid

What is Uric Acid?

Uric acid is a chemical that is produced when the body breaks down the substances called purines. Purines are produced normally in the body and are also found in some foods and drinks like liver, anchovies, mackerel, dried beans and peas, and beer.

Mostly, uric acid dissolves in blood and travels to the kidneys. From there, it filtered out into the urine or passes through your intestines to regulate “normal” levels.

If the body produces too much uric acid or does not remove enough of it, you can get sick. Excessive production of uric acid in the blood is known as hyperuricemia.

Normal Uric acid levels in females are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL in males.

Uric acid formation may occur when the blood uric acid level rises above the level of 7 mg/dL. It causes ailments such as kidney stones, and gout (collection of uric acid crystals in the joints, especially in your toes and fingers), may occur.

What are the causes of high Uric Acid?

Most of the time, a high uric acid level occurs when the kidneys don’t eliminate an efficient level of uric acid.

Causes of high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) can be divided into primary (increased uric acid levels due to purine), and secondary (high levels of uric acid due to another disease). Sometimes, there is a high production of uric acid than it can excrete.

Most of the factors that may cause a high uric acid level in the blood include:

  1. Diuretics (water retention relievers)
  2. Drinking too much alcohol
  3. Genetics (inherited tendencies)
  4. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  5. Immune-suppressing drugs
  6. Niacin, or vitamin B-3
  7. Obesity
  8. Psoriasis

High uric acid levels during radiation and chemotherapy kill a lot of cells in the body, which may raise the level of uric acid in the blood. The test is done to check that the level doesn’t get too high.

Primary Hyperuricemia

  • Increased production of uric acid from purine
  • Your kidneys cannot get rid of the uric acid in the blood, results in high levels of uric acid

Secondary Hyperuricemia

  • Kidney disease – This may cause not been unable to clear the uric acid out of the system, thus causing hyperuricemia.
  • Medications can cause in an increase in the level of uric acid in the blood
  • Endocrine or metabolic conditions -certain forms of diabetes, or acidosis can cause hyperuricemia.

What are the symptoms of Hyperuricemia?

You may not have any symptoms but if there is an elevation of blood uric acid in the blood and a person is undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia or lymphoma, then the symptoms related to kidney problems, or gouty arthritis from high uric acid levels in your blood will be there.

  • Other symptoms may be fever, chills, fatigue if the uric acid levels are elevated (caused by tumor lysis syndrome)

How to treat Bronchitis through Ayurvedic Treatment?

Bronchitis is an infection of the main airways of the lungs (bronchi), which causes them to become irritated and inflamed. The main airways branch off on either side of the trachea which leads to smaller and smaller airways inside the lungs that are called bronchioles.

The walls of the main airways produce mucus to trap dust and other particles which then irritates.

In most of the cases, bronchitis happens when an infection irritates and inflames the airways and causes them to produce more mucus than usual. Hence, the body tries to shift this extra mucus through coughing.

Hence bronchitis occurs when the bronchial tubes, which carry air to the lungs become inflamed and swollen.

Bronchitis can be described as two types which is being either acute bronchitis or chronic bronchitis.

Two types include:

Acute bronchitis: It is the more common type of disease. Symptoms usually last for a few weeks, but it doesn’t usually cause problems. It commonly affects people of all ages, but it mostly happens in children under the age group of 5.

Chronic bronchitis. It is the more serious type of bronchitis that keeps coming back or doesn’t go away.

What is an Ayurvedic view for Bronchitis?

In Ayurveda, bronchitis is correlated with Kasaroga in which there is an aggravation of Vata and Kaphadosha. These vitiated doshascauses cough, common cold, excessive mucus production, breathlessness, chest congestion, etc. In bronchitis, there is an accumulation of ama in the lungs.

What are the causes of Bronchitis?

Causes of bronchitis are;

Viral and bacterial infections:

Bronchitis is usually caused due to a virus. But less often, it is caused due to bacteria. It is also stated that in most of the cases, bronchitis is caused by the same viruses that cause common cold or flu.

This virus is present in millions of tiny droplets that come out of the nose and mouth during coughing or sneezing.

These droplets typically spread by hang suspended in the air for a while, then land on surfaces. On these surfaces, the virus can survive for up to 24 hours. A person who touches these virus-containing surfaces can spread the virus further by touching something else.

What are the symptoms of Bronchitis?

Symptoms of bronchitis are:

The main symptom of acute bronchitis is having cough, which may bring up clear, yellowish-grey or greenish colored mucus (phlegm).

Other symptoms are similar to that of the common cold or sinusitis, that may include:

  • a sore throat
  • a headache
  • a runny or blocked nose
  • aches and pains
  • tiredness

In acute bronchitis, a cough may last for several weeks after other symptoms have gone. Continuous coughing makes the chest and stomach muscles sore.

In some of the people, there is shortness of breath or wheezing as a result of inflamed airways. But it is more common in those who are suffering from long-term (chronic) bronchitis.

What are the risk factors for Bronchitis?

Various risk factors that increase the risk of bronchitis include:

  1. Cigarette smoking: People who are smoking or who live with a smoker are at a higher risk of acute bronchitis as well as chronic bronchitis.
  2. Low resistance: It results from another acute illness, such as a common cold, or from a chronic condition that compromises the immune system of the body. Older adults, infants, and young children are more vulnerable to infection.
  3. Exposure to irritants on the job: The risk of developing bronchitis is more, if you work around certain lung irritants, such as grains or textiles, or if you are exposed to chemical fumes.
  4. Gastric reflux: Repeated bouts of severe heartburn irritates the throat and make you more prone to developing bronchitis.
