What are Tonsils?
The two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of your throat is known as Tonsils.
Function- Tonsils helps to prevent your body from getting an infection or plays an important role in defense mechanism. When they become infected, the condition is called tonsillitis.
It is a common childhood illness but can occur at any age.
What are Sign and Symptoms of Tonsillitis?
The most common signs and symptoms are-
1.Red and Swollen tonsils.
2.Whitish yellow patches on the tongue.
3.Pain and difficulty in swallowing.
5.Enlarged neck & swollen glands.
7.Bad breath may be experienced
8.Stomach ache is experienced especially in younger children.
9.Stiffness of Neck
Signs of tonsillitis in Young children (who are unable to describe the pain) are as follows-
1.Drooling of saliva occurs due to difficult or painful swallowing.
2.Child refuses to eat.
4.Irritating or annoying Behavior.
This condition can be uncomfortable and unpleasant, but it is rarely a major health concern. Mostly the people recover from it within a few days, whether they take medication or not. Most of the symptoms may resolve within 7 to 10 days.

What are the causes of Tonsillitis?
It is mostly caused by common viruses and can also be caused by bacterial infections.
Causative Organism- Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus), the bacterium that causes strep throat.
1.Young age- It is common in children to suffer from tonsillitis, but rarely occurs in children younger than age 2. Viral tonsillitis is common in younger children while Bacterial Tonsillitis is most common in children between ages 5 to 15.
2.Exposure to germs- Frequent exposure to germs in School-age children.
Swelling or inflammation of the tonsils from ongoing (chronic) or frequent tonsillitis may cause the following complications –
1.Difficulty in breathing.
2.Obstructive sleep apnea or Breathing is disrupted during sleep
3.Tonsillar cellulitis or Infection that may spread deep into the surrounding tissue.
4.Peritonsillar abscess or Infection that can cause a collection of pus behind a tonsil.
AYURVEDIC VIEW OF TONSILITIS
1.As per Ayurveda perspective, it is correlated to Tundikeri.
2.It is described under Urdhvajatrugata roga and categorized under Talugataroga or diseases of the palate as well as Kanthagataroga or diseases of throat.
3.It is caused due to Aharaja hetus i.e. Dietary causes. It is often caused by vibaddhata or constipation.
4.Ayurveda acts on the root cause and fortifies the body against further attacks of Tonsilitis.
5.Tonsillitis Management in Ayurveda involves a combination of a variety of Aushadahis or herbal medicines, changes in aahar or dietary changes, along with changes in Vihara or lifestyle changes.
AAHAR OR DIETARY CHANGES
1.Dairy products, sugar and animal products should be avoided for a week
2.Avoid oily and spicy food as it may irritate your throat.
3.Avoid sour foods items such as curds, buttermilk, and fried foods
4.Drink plenty of fluid or water
5.Consume honey with cider vinegar, herbal teas, ginger tea or juice, watermelon juice, carrot juice, apple juice, elderberry juice, and blackcurrant tea or juice.
6.The above items are effective during infection and help to improve immunity levels and relieve from sore throat.
VIHAR OR LIFESTYLE CHANGES
1.Give plenty of rest to your throat.
2.Avoid excessive talking.
3.Avoid diwaswapna or day time sleep as it may lead to Kapha build-up
4.Avoid exposure to cold breeze and water
5.Practice a good oral hygiene
6.Gargling with solution of quarter teaspoonful of common salt or yavakshaara dissolved in half a glass of warm water.
7.Avoid rain showers or frequent head baths.
