Stomach pain is a condition in which a person feels discomfort in or around the stomach. Unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyle leads to any kind of stomach related disorders.

Causes of abdominal pain

Abdominal pain can be caused by many conditions. The main cause of abdominal pain includes infection, abnormal growths, inflammation of organs, etc.
Cramps during menstruation also cause lower abdominal pain, but these are more commonly known to cause pelvic pain.

Other common causes of abdominal pain include:

Diagnosis is done by taking history and doing a physical investigation of the patient.
Some blood investigations are also helpful. Imaging techniques like CT abdomen, MRI are helpful to exclude out the cause.


Medications are given to treat the underlying causes. For eg.

  1. Drugs to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  2. Antibiotics to treat infection
  3. Drugs to reduce inflammation
  4. Targeted treatments for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Surgery is done in conditions like a kidney stone, appendicitis, etc.

Ayurvedic Approach in Stomach pain

In Ayurveda Decreased digestive fire is considered as root cause of all diseases especially disorders related to stomach. Various kind of unhealthy dietary habits leads to vitiation of agni and cause stomach disorders.

According to Ayurveda, various kind of harmful foods, such as fried and junk foods, processed meats, and very cold foods, can create undigested residue that forms toxins, or in Ayurvedic terms “ama.” Ama is the main root cause of disease.

So, to treat the stomach disorders main aim is to balance this digestive fire. When it comes to good eating habits, or eating something following points should kept in mind

Eat only when you feel hungry.

gaps of at least three hours between meals, after the digestion of previous meal

Ginger ( saunth)

Ginger is a commonly used natural remedy for an upset stomach and indigestion.
Meditative properties of Ginger is due to chemicals like gingerols and shogaols that help speed up stomach contractions and help in digestion of undigested food so cure various kind of stomach related problems like indigestion, nausea , vomiting etc. Ginger can be used by adding this in daily cooking or herbal tea.

Asafoetida ( Hing )
